
Energy-from-Waste Development in China
Chengdu
In 2008, Covanta joint venture with Chongqing Iron & Steel Company (Group) Ltd. received an award to build, operate and transfer an Energy-from-Waste facility for Chengdu Municipality, in Sichuan Province, People’s Republic of China. Construction of the facility is underway and once completed will have the capacity to process 1,800 tons per day of municipal solid waste and generate 36 megawatts (MW) of power under a 25 year concession agreement.
Once the facility is fully operational it will provide power to the City of Chengdu and maintain 70 green jobs in the community.
Taixing
Covanta Energy has taken an 85 percent stake in a joint venture with Jiangsu Taineng Group Ltd. to build a new Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facility to serve the cities of Taixing and Yangzhong with a total project value of US$30 million.
Covanta, which has secured long-term waste disposal contracts with the municipal governments of Taixing and Yangzhong and is building a 350 metric ton per day facility in the Taixing Economic Development Zone expected to generate 30 metric tons per hour of steam to power local businesses under a 25 year concession agreement. The new facility is being constructed adjacent to Covanta and Jiangsu Taineng Group’s existing joint-venture, a cogeneration power plant. Jiangsu Taineng Group is wholly-owned by the municipal government of Taixing and operates under the supervision of Taixing Economic and Trade Commission.
Construction for the Taixing Energy-from-Waste facility began in late 2009 and will be completed in 2011. The facility will provide and maintain 30 green jobs in the community.
