Covanta's Second Corporate Sustainability Report

Covanta Energy is committed to exhibiting transparency with regard to our priorities, goals, initiatives and performance relating to generating clean, renewable energy via our Energy-from-Waste (EfW)  process. Our Clean World Initiative (CWI)—a set of commitments to further our sustainability performance—represents a continuing investment in our future that enhances stockholder value by making our business more sustainable from an economical, environmental, and social perspective. In 2012, we proudly recognized the fifth anniversary of CWI  and look forward to many more years of success under its auspices.

With five years of sustainable progress underscoring our achievements, we have released our second Corporate Sustainability Report. In the report, we identify for the first time a set of goals related to CWI objectives, many of which are related to the adoption of zero landfill policies by our municipal, commercial, and industrial clients. This new behavior is creating opportunities around our core competency, EfW, as well as our related variations including gasification, waste management services including recycling, electronic waste, and others that further illustrate our commitment to superior governance and transparency. It also serves as general overview of our social performance and environmental stewardship for our employees, operating communities, municipalities, shareholders, non-governmental organizations, and investors, among others. Furthermore, the report begins to illustrate the explicit connection of performance against our goals to the financial success of our business.

While the path forward for the EfW industry continues to evolve, there is immense potential to foster innovation through our sustainability priorities as we advance the company's mission on behalf of all of our stakeholders.
