The Dutchess County Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facility is operated by Covanta Hudson Valley Renewable Energy, LLC for the Dutchess County Resource Recovery Agency. The facility is owned by Dutchess County (NY) and serves the greater Dutchess area.
Covanta Hudson Valley began commercial operation in 1989 and can process approximately 160,000 tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) annually. The steam generated is used to operate a turbine generator rated at 9.2 megawatts of output. The facility generates enough electricity to power approximately 10,000 homes per year, which is equivalent to saving about 160,000 barrels of oil per year. The facility recovers ferrous (steel) metal and recycles approximately 6,000 tons per year.
