About Covanta MacArthur

Covanta MacArthur in Ronkonkoma, New York began commercial operations in March 1990 under an agreement with the Islip Resource Recovery Agency, which owns the facility. The facility processes 485 tons per day of municipal solid waste (MSW), generating up to 12 megawatts (MW) of renewable electricity, or enough to power 12,000 Long Island homes.

Covanta MacArthur utilizes MSW as fuel to generate clean, reliable energy. This is a sensible and proven solution to some of our most pressing concerns—securing sources of renewable energy, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and sustainably managing the disposal of locally-generated MSW.

In 2000, Covanta MacArthur was designated as a U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) Star facility, a program designed for exemplary worksites with comprehensive, successful safety and health management systems. The majority of Covanta’s facilities are VPP Star locations, a testament to the company’s commitment to employee safety.  As a result of the facility’s thorough approach to environmental stewardship, the facility’s Environmental Management System (EMS) was awarded ISO-14001 certification, an environmental management system standard offered by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 2001.
