The Covanta Wallingford Energy-from-Waste facility, operating as Covanta Projects of Wallingford, L.P., began commercial operation in May 1989 and is located between Hartford and New Haven, Connecticut. The facility processes 420 tons per day of solid waste, which generates 11 megawatts of renewable energy that is sold to Connecticut Light and Power Company, a Northeast Utilities subsidiary. Covanta Energy owns and operates the facility and serves a combined population of about 200,000.
