The Babylon Resource Recovery Facility began commercial operation in April 1989 and serves the Town of Babylon. The facility processes 750 tons-per-day of solid waste and generates up to 17 megawatts of renewable energy that is sold to Long Island Power Authority. With a moratorium on landfilling on Long Island, the Babylon facility provides an environmentally safe way to dispose of waste. This facility also operates with a "zero discharge" of process water. That means that all wastewater generated on-site is treated and reused. The facility also utilizes runoff from the landfill, called leachate, for part of its process water.
