The Haverhill Resource Recovery Facility began commercial operation in June 1989. The facility processes 1,650 tons-per-day of solid waste, generating up to 48 megawatts of renewable energy that is sold to an energy
wholesaler for use on New England's power grid. The facility is equipped with a ferrous and non-ferrous collection system and an air-cooled condenser that condenses turbine exhaust. In addition, Covanta Energy operates hauling vehicles that serve two transfer stations.
On November 21, 2003, Covanta Haverhill, Inc. celebrated entry into the OSHA
Voluntary Participation Program (VPP) with its flag raising ceremony. Covanta
Haverhill has earned the notoriety of being the first Covanta Energy facility to
enter the VPP ranks.
