The Wallingford facility, located between Hartford and New Haven, Connecticut, began commercial operation in May 1989. The facility processes 420 tons per day of solid waste, which generates 11 megawatts of renewable energy that is sold to Connecticut Light and Power Company, a Northeast Utilities subsidiary. Covanta Energy operates the facility for the Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority (CRRA). CRRA owns the Mid-Conn. facility in Hartford, also operated by Covanta Energy. The Wallingford facility serves the towns of Cheshire, Hamden, Meriden, North Haven, and Wallingford, with a combined population of about 200,000.
